Does God Exist? A Debate Between Two Brothers

The Hitchens brothers (Christopher is on the left, Peter on the right) span a theological divide: Christopher is an avowed atheist. Peter is a Christian (and Anglican). Christopher has written a book attacking religious belief entitled "God is Not Great."

Each of us probably know folks who would profess to be atheists. How do we, as Christians, respond in a way that provides a faithful witness to God's truth? Peter Hitchens has clearly given this much thought and has made a response that can be read here. If you'd like to join the discussion on this topic, feel free to comment on this post.

In God we trust.
One nation under God.
The ten comandments.
As we slowly delete the founding principles of this great nation by atheist lead ACLU members, by removing God from our society, we slowly bring about the ruination of it. The weakening of the United States of America is in direct proportion to the weakening of its' religious morality. My opinion, my observation.

In talking to an atheist I pose the question what if you are wrong?? What do you have to lose?? Only eternal life. What you could gain by removing your pride, and intellect; far outweighs what you have to gain of your own human fralities.

Christianity is not tried and found lacking by individuals, it is mostly found hard and left untried.

Lift high the cross!!
Pray with deep sincerity for those who do not believe. Pride goeth before the fall. Their fall is eternal.

"There but for the grace of God go I".It is by His loving merciful grace that I have the gift of faith. No effort of mine could have attained that. Thank you Jesus!!

Live Love, Love and live! J.D.

I HAVE READ C.H. BOOK. IT WAS SO DIFFICULT TO READ WHAT HE HAS SEEN AND WHAT FACTS HE HAS RESEARCH. IT SEEMS HE IS SO WEIGHED DOWN WITH THE ILLS OF THIS WORLD AND HOW HORRENDOUS WE HUMAN BEINGS HAVE BEEN TO ONE ANOTHER. WHAT REALLY SADDENS ME IS HIS FOCUS ON CHRISTIANITY AS 'BLAME' FOR THIS ILLS OF MANKIND. I AM DEEPLY SORRY FOR HIS DESPAIR AS HE SEES LIFE. I THINK HE WILL BE A MIGHTY CHRISTIAN SOMEDAY AND PRAY FOR HIM. HE HAS SO MANY QUALITIES EVEN I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE AS A CARING HUMAN BEING. "BLESSED ARE THE 'POOR IN SPIRIT'." THANK YOU.

Christopher seems to have an acute moral conscience, and believes that what he calls evil is something that we should recognize as evil also. Unfortunately, atheists have a hard time giving a legitimate explanation of why we should care about evil. As Peter Hitchens eloquently said:

"He [Christopher] even refers to "conscience" and makes frequent thunderous denunciations of various evil actions. Where is his certain knowledge of what is right and wrong supposed to have come from? How can the idea of a conscience have any meaning in a world of random chance, where in the end we are all just collections of molecules swirling in a purposeless confusion? If you are getting inner promptings, why should you pay any attention to them? It is as absurd as the idea of a compass with no magnetic North. You might as well take moral instruction from your bile duct."

This is why I too think there is still hope for Christopher. If he really does care about evil, there is a chance that in the future he may push deeper in his spiritual quest, and recognize that without God there is no such thing as good and evil...just things you or I may or may not like.

Lord I pray compassion for those who's hearts care about their fellow man. Raise them up into Your supreme glory. In your time, join them with Your angels and archangels, and all your saints, and all the companies of heaven, who forever sing your praises; Holy Lord, God of Power and Might.

We needn't fear those who do not choose to hear the Word. For our God is o m n i p o t e n t. Yahweh,Jehovah,The Great I Am, Wonderful Counselor, Abba Father, The Alpha and the Omega...what entity or groups can stand against the creator of all that is???

We needn't fear for athiests' souls, for our God is Loving and copassionate. His mercy is unfathomable to us mortals. Who knows maybe, yes maybe they too can gain knowlege of God by osmosis. Hmmm maybe not.

Continue to Love, and serve, and carry the message to those who are in need.Exhort fellows always; believers or not!!
